William George's Story.

2nd Lieutenant William George Upton was killed in action near Roulers, Belgium on 4th October 1918. He was 20 years old.

William was born on 22nd August 1898, in Sandbach, the only son of George Henry Upton and Jessie Mary Simpson, of Betchton, near Sandbach.  He had an older sister Alice Mary Upton born in 1895. William was baptised at St Mary's Church in Sandbach on 2nd October 1898. His father's occupation was recorded as "Gentleman".



When he was two, his home was the Manor House, Betchton, where the family lived with William's widowed grandfather. 

William joined the RAF on 1st April 1918. His home address was Dubthorn Villa, Betchton, Cheshire.




William was buried in Dadizeele Cemetery.









He is remembered on this plaque in St Mary's Church, Sandbach.





His sister Alice married John Hill on 2nd November 1921. By 1938, his parents had moved to Wales. Their address after 1921 was "Greystone," Mostyn Avenue, Llandudno. His mother Jessie died in April 1938.
