Hoylake Soldier Killed.

AN EX-COLPORTEUR.

We regret to record the death in battle of Lance-Corporal Dennis C. Woodward, whose wife resides at 9, Airlie Road, Hoylake. Before the war he was engaged as a colporteur at Southport, and joined the 7th Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment, in September, going to France at the beginning of March. His brother, Private B. Woodward, is at the front with the Scottish Borderers, and his brother-in-law, Lance-Corporal Joe Sutton, is with the 11th Cheshires at Aldershot. Lance-Corporal Woodward was a son-in-law of Mrs. Sutton, of Reed’s Farm, Moreton.

The following letter of sympathy has been received, in addition to others, by the widow from Sergeant A. S. Brebner:- “It is with deep regret that I find myself compelled to write to you in regard to the death of your husband, Lance-Corporal Woodward. It may be a slight consolation to you to know that he passed away peacefully, and almost immediately he was hit, suffering not the least pain. He was wounded in the back of the head, and left breast, the head wound causing death. He is buried in the corner of a nice little French cemetery, beside a little village called Cuincy, about 11 kilometres from the city of Bethune. Your late husband was respected by everyone with whom he came into contact, and I am sure I have lost a very promising non-com officer and a good Christian soldier. You have my deepest sympathy in this your hour of trial. God’s will be done.”
