Daniel's Story.
Daniel was born in 1882, the oldest son of Samuel Trueman and Mary Ellen Stubbs of 55, Union Street Sandbach. He married Sarah Wilson (1883 - 1962) on 30th December 1911. They had two children, Sam and Elsie, and resided at 103 Union Street, Sandbach.
Daniel had served sixteen years in the army. After serving in India he was then sent out to South Africa to fight in the Boer war. He was employed at Brunner Mond at the outbreak of the Great War. Being a reservist, he was recalled to join his regiment.
He was posted to the Dardanelles and then transferred to the Persian Gulf campaign. Many soldiers serving in this campaign came down with illness due to the poor and unsanitary conditions, and died of dysentery. Dan was one of them; he is recorded to have died, aged 35, from colic on 22nd May 1916. His brother Samuel had died of wounds only a few weeks earlier on 7th April 1916.
Daniel is remembered on the Brunner Mond Memorial, now located in Sandbach Cemetery, The Hill, Sandbach,
In 1921, Sarah married Edward Challiner, and her new surname appears in the following record.
