Charles Edward's Story.

Birkenhead News  02 June 1915

Killed after Nine Months’ Fighting.

ANOTHER LOCAL HERO

Miss Mansell, who resides at 40, Beckwith Street, Birkenhead, has received a very sad and touching letter from Mrs. Mansell, the wife of Pte. Mansell, of the 2nd Cheshire Regt., who lives at Clogher, Co. Tyrone, in which she imparts the sad news that Pte. Charles Mansell was killed in action during the fighting on Hill 60 on May 4th.

Pte. Mansell, who was exceedingly well-known in Birkenhead, was 27 years of age, and was educated at St. Mary’s School, after which he worked as a labourer at Messrs. Cammell Laird’s. Four years ago he enlisted in the 4th King’s Liverpool Regt., transferring after 6 months to the 2nd Cheshires, with whom he was on service, returning previous to the war. He was included amongst the first contingent to leave these shores. Frequent letters have been received from him, both by his wife and sister, the last received being about a week before the fatal day. In that letter he said :- “I have been through all the fierce encounters since the Battle of Mons, but I thank God I have come through uninjured.”

The deceased soldier was a married man with one child, and much sympathy is extended to the widow and relatives.
