Meols Soldier Dies of Wounds
Tale of Terrible Suffering
PICKED UP BY THE ENEMY
The terrible sufferings of a young Meols soldier named John Sneddon have just been revealed through the news which has now filtered through, of the death from wounds in a Cologne hospital.
Pte. Sneddon, who was only 25 years of age, was attached to the 8th Gordon Highlanders. He was wounded in the first charge made by his regiment on September 27th, last year. In addition to wounds in his side, a high explosive bullet penetrated his thigh, breaking the bone in two places. He lay on the battlefield for three full days and nights before being picked up by the enemy and taken prisoner. By that time his feet were so swollen that his boots had to be cut away from his feet. From that time until January 6th, when he died, the gallant lad had lain flat on his back in plaster of Paris. While he was suffering all these agonies cheery postcards through to his father, Mr. John C. Sneddon, of 8, King’s Avenue, Meols, stating that his boy was getting better.
Before joining the army Pte. Sneddon was employed in the Liverpool branch of the London City and Midland, where he had been for upwards of nine years.
