John's Story.

Born Crewe, enlisted Chester. Son of George and Elizabeth Latham of 58, Ford Lane, Crewe and husband of Maggie Latham (nee Watkins) of 10, St. Michaels View, Ford Lane, Crewe, whom he married on October 31, 1908. A former pupil of Hightown LNWR Boys School. He joined up on the outbreak of war from the Crewe North Steam Sheds. Went to France on May 31, 1915. His wife received news that her husband had been shot through the head. After his death she received a letter stating he had won a posthumous DCM awarded to him on March 23, 1916, which carried a gratuity of £20, although no record of this award has been found. His brother George was killed in action during the Battle of Jutland in May 1916.
