Alexander Robert's Story.

Alexander Robert Cash was born in Birkenhead, in 1893, the son of William Henry Cash and Elizabeth Cash. His father was born in Liverpool, in 1869, and his mother had been born in Birkenhead, in the same year. They married in 1888, and had 3 children: Alexander Robert Cash (born in 1893); Lulu A. Cash (born in 1894); and Mary C. Cash (born in 1895). By 1911, they were living at “The Dolphin Hotel”, 3, Cathcart Street, Birkenhead, and William was a self-employed Licensed Victualler. Alexander Robert Cash had been educated at Annan School (on the border with Scotland), and at Poulton Road School’s, Wallasey. He was later employed as an Engineer and Motor Driver at The Birkenhead Motor Company, Cleveland Street, Birkenhead.
 
On 11th December 1915, Alexander Robert Cash attested under the Derby Scheme, at Wallasey. He was 22 years 300 day’s old at the time of his attestation, and his home address was given as 27, Greasby Road, Liscard, Wallasey. At his medical, Alexander Robert Cash was recorded as being 5ft 5 ½ in tall; with a fully expanded chest of 34in; and weighing 124 lbs. He was posted to the Army Reserve on the same day that he had been attested. On 29th January 1916, Alexander Robert Cash was mobilized and posted to the 14th (Reserve) Bn Cheshire Regiment, at Prees Heath Camp, Shropshire. Private Cash, on completing his training, embarked for Mesopotamia, at Devonport, on 22nd May 1916, and disembarked at Basra on 13th June 1916. On his arrival in Mesopotamia, he was posted to the 8th Bn Cheshire Regiment. On 6th August 1916, Private Cash took ill suffering with dysentery. He was admitted to No.32 British General Hospital, Amara, on 6th August 1916, suffering with dysentery, blood stained stools, and was thin, emaciated, and very restless. By the evening of 8th August 1916, his temperature was 101.2, and his general condition was much worse. He was showing symptoms of toxaemia, and was given hypodermic strychnine, and Private Cash passed away at 6pm 8th August 1916. Private Cash was buried in Plot 9, Row B, Grave 4, Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
