Henry's Story.

Henry Hughes was born in 1899 to Henry and Mary Hughes in Runcorn. In 1911 the family are found in be living at 12 OKell Street, Runcorn. The family consisted of Henry, his parents, Annie(14), Maggie (10), Ben (8), Lily (5), Mary (3) and David (1). Henry is listed as a pupil and was 12 years old.

After leaving school he joined the Liverpool Lighterage Company and was a mate of the tugboat Bynita. He joined the forces in March 1917 and went to France a year later.

He was wounded by a gunshot wound in the abdomen on Good Friday and died at No 41 casualty clearing station. Henry was an old boy of Balfour Road School and attended Camden Wesleyan Church and Sunday school, and was neither late nor absent for 10 years. He was commemorated on the marble plaque at Brunswick Chapel.

Hi is buried to the west of Amiens at Namps Au Val British Cemetery, which became the cemetery for the 41st, 50th and 55th Casualty Clearing Stations.
