James's Story.
James was the son of Lettice Holmes, 11 King Street East, Warren Street, Stockport. He enlisted in August 1914 and, in June the following year, went overseas to go into action at Gallipoli.Conditions in the trenches were horrendous with troops having insufficient food and water. Dysentery was rife. The Battalion's War Diary for November 1915 notes that whilst three men had been killed in action, 341 were away from duty due to sickness. It is thought that James had contracted an illness and was aboard a hospital ship bound for Malta when he died. He was buried at sea.
