Alfred's Story.

Born in 1890 at Alderley Edge, son of stone mason, George Dunville and Sarah Haywood, of, South Street. This was a family of seven children, Alice, Harry, Charles, Alfred, Mary Ellen, George and Edith Annie. Alfred was employed as a painter and decorator, by Mr Jaffrey, prior to his enlistment.

He enlisted at Wilmslow, and after his initial training he was drafted to France, 14/02/1915. The 5th Battalion Cheshire’s had spent a very busy five weeks in September 1916 preparing trenches, about a thousand yards long, in front of Boule-aux Wood, within about 100 yards of the Germans, in preparation for the battle at Le Transloy (1st to 18th October).

Alfred died of wounds received, Monday, 2 October 1916, he was aged 26 years.
