BIRKENHEAD SOLDIER DIES IN HOSPITAL.

Sympathy will be extended to Mr. and Mrs. Mason, of 3, Moreton Street, Birkenhead, who have lately received the sorrowful tidings of the death in hospital of their son, Sapper G. L. Mason. He joined up on Oct. 21st, 1914, and was drafted to Malta after two months’ training, and ultimately landed in the Dardanalles in April of the following year. After ten months’ active service he became attached to the desert column, and arrived in Palestine in 1917. His last letter was received on Oct. 10th. He died on Nov. 8th at the 21st General Hospital, Alexandria, at the age of 26, death being due to broncho-pneumonia. Sapper G. L. Mason received his education at St. Peter’s School, and previous to enlistment was employed at Messrs. Gordon Alison and Co. as a boilermaker. A member of St. Andrew’s Church, Sapper Mason was a prominent Orangeman and belonged to the Protestant Boy Band.

Although the newspaper article reports George’s middle initial as ‘L’, his name is George Thomas Mason.
