Birkenhead News  23 June 1917

YOUNG NAVAL OFFICER KILLED.

Sub. Lieut. Sylk-Rowlands.

The distressing news has been received by Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rowlands, of Rosemount, Oxton, informing them that their son, Christopher Macaulay Sylk-Rowlands (R.N.R.), who was acting sub-lieutenant, has been killed.

This popular young naval officer, who was 20 years of age, in the early days of the war was a cadet on the White Star training ship Mersey. He was afterwards midshipman R.N.R. on board HMS “Cedric.”

He met his death whilst acting sub-lieutenant on board one of H.M. destroyers through coming into contact with a mine. These are up to the time of going to press the only details received by Mr. and Mrs. Rowlands to whom much sympathy is being shown.
