Birkenhead News June 1916
From the Effects of Gas.
BIRKENHEAD SOLDIER DIES.
News has been received by his wife, who resides at 94, Brook Street, that her husband, Pte. M. Duggan, of the 2nd Royal Irish Regiment, has died in a hospital in Rouen, France having been “gassed” in the trenches.
Private Duggan had belonged to the regiment for over none years, and went out to France in November. His wife received numerous letters from him. On May 27th whilst engaged with the enemy he was overcome by gas, and was taken to Rouen, where he died on June 4th. A good deal of sympathy is expressed with the bereaved relatives.
Although the above report states that Martin Duggan died on the 4th June the official records confirm his date of death as 5th July.
