George Charnley Littleton's Story.

George was born in Knutsford in 1882, only son of Mr George Littleton (cotton manufacturer)  & Annie M Dewhurst of Beechwood, Lymm.

After his father died in the early 1900's his mother Annie married Walter John Jones (a cotton manufacturer) and the couple, along with George and his younger sister, moved to Blakemere, Sandiway, Northwich.

A very tragic incident in his young life was the death from drowning in Lymm Dam of his cousin, Miss Nina Davidson niece of the Archbishop of Canterbury.  The two had been out duck shooting when Nina attempted to pull a dog out of the water, overbalanced and fell in.  George, then only a young boy, ran for help but unfortuantely Nina was unable to be resuscitated.

He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 24.

George's sister Miss Nita Dewhurst did hospital work in London during the war, also all of his uncles served - Major Harry Dewhurst, Major Cyril Dewhurst, Captain George P Dewhurst and Lieutenant W Arthur Dewhurst.
