William Alfred's Story.

Birkenhead News  05 August 1916

Wirral “Pal” Killed.

One who was “Liked by All.”

Mrs. Daly, widow of Mr. J. Daly, late of Upton, has received official notification of the death of her third son, Pte. Wm. Alfred Daly. He joined the Army (13th Cheshires) in December, 1914, and went to France in Sept., 1915. Previous to joining the colours he lived with his married brother at 32, Gorsefield Road, Prenton.

Mrs. Daly has received a letter of sympathy from Sergt. Dodd, who says :- “It is my painful duty to inform you of your brother’s death. Bill, as we all knew him, was killed on July 16th in the act of mounting the parapet to charge the enemy’s trenches. We all miss him very much, for he was a good soldier and liked by all. We know how hard it will be for you but we ask you to console yourself with the thought that he died a noble death, sacrificing all for God, King and country. No one could have died more bravely. All the boys in the platoon and myself ask you to accept our deepest sympathy in losing so noble a brother.”
