William's Story.




The following extract from the Birkenhead News states the last name of the serviceman as Haldane however his correct last name is Haldon.

NAVAL FUNERAL AT FLAYBRICK

Interment of Local Fireman

On Tuesday the remains of Fireman William Haldane, of H.M.S. King Orry, whose death occurred at his residence, 12 Thomas Street, Birkenhead on the 23rd inst. from pneumonia, were laid to rest at Flaybrick hill Cemetery with full naval and military honours. The band of the 4th Cheshires played the “Dead March” in “Saul”, and a firing party of the 3rd Cheshires fired three vollies over the grave, after which the “Last Post” was sounded.

There was an exceptionally large number of general mourners, and several wreathes were received from friends and family.
