Noel's Story.
Born in 1881 at Altrincham, the second son of cotton merchant, William and Margaret Armitage, “The” Mount, Altrincham. The 1891 census shows the Armitage family had moved to Beech Hurst, Altrincham. Noel was educated at Sedbergh School. In the second quarter of 1907, Noel married Alice Marion Cox at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and the 1911 census indicates that they set up home at The Wood House, Lower Withington. He spent the whole of his business life with Messrs Armitage and Rigby, at Cockhedge Mills, of which his father was a director. His occupation was cotton manufacturer and merchant. Noel joined the Cheshire Yeomanry in August 1914, as a trooper and obtained his commission in February 1915. He rose to the rank of Captain, and in 1916 he transferred to the Scottish Horse. In November 1917, he was drafted with the British Expeditionary Force to France and was attached to the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed by machine gun bullets whilst leading his platoon in an engagement, he was aged 37 years. Noel was killed in action, Thursday, 25 April 1918, aged 37 years.
