Birkenhead News  05 May 1917

Birkenhead Military Medallist Killed.

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Fazakerley, of 6, Mortimer Street, Birkenhead, that their son, Pte. Alf Fazakerley, of the King’s Liverpool Regt., has been killed in action. In October, 1916, Pte. Fazakerley won the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty during operations on the Somme. He was educated at the Higher Elementary School, where he was very popular, and where he was the champion swimmer for two consecutive seasons, and junior champion of Birkenhead in 1910, belonging also to the Birkenhead Swimming Club. After leaving school Pre. Fazakerley was employed in the offices of Sir William Lever, and later he went to sea as an apprentice in the firm of R. P. Houston. His last ship was the “Hypatia”. On the outbreak of war he joined the King’s Liverpool Regt. There are many friends of this popular young boy left to mourn his loss. We extend deepest sympathy to his parents in their bereavement.
