Extract from the Congleton Chronicle 1918.

The passing of Gunner Charles William Holland. of the Royal Horse Artillery, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Holland, of 11, Wagg's Street, Congleton, whose death was recently accounted in the Chronicle, adds another name to the long list of our gallant townsmen who have made the supreme sacrifice in the name of liberty and justice.

Gunner Holland had many friends in Congleton and was formerly a popular member of the St Peter's Football Club. Although he had been employed out of town some time prior to enlisting he still retained the close friendship of many local football enthusiasts, with whom he was ever a favourite and by all, his death is deeply regretted.

His parents have received the following letter from the Sister in Charge at the Casualty Clearing Station in which he passed away.

Dear, Mrs. Holland,

After writing to you, your son got much worse and was quite delirious nearly all yesterday. He died at 23:00 hours last night, the 1st of July 1918. In his condition he was unable to leave any message, but he passed away very peacefully. He will be buried by his own Chaplain in the Military Cemetery near here, where so many of our fine young men are lying. It must be a dreadful blow to you, but I hope it will be a little comfort to know that he died in a British hospital, where all that could possibly be done for him was done.

With deepest sympathy.
We do not forget him, nor do we intend, We think of him daily, and will to the end,
We mourn him in silence and sorrow unseen,
And dwell in the memory of days that have been.

Cheshire County Memorial Project would like to thank John and Christopher Pullen for this information on Charles.
