Born Crewe, enlisted Chester. Son of John and Ada Rowlands of 31, Princess Street, Coppenhall. Former pupil at Broad Street School and member of the Railway Volunteers. Prior to enlisting on September 3, 1914, worked in No.2 Erecting Shop, Crewe Works as an apprentice fitter. Embarked from Southampton for France on September 25, 1915. Acting as a signaller, was shot through the throat whilst advancing from a shell hole.
