Birkenhead News  18 July 1918

KILLED IN ACTION.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Hooper, 377, Price Street, have received the sad news of the death of their eldest son. Pte. H. R. Hooper, who was attached to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Pte. Hooper was only 19 years of age, and was an old boy of St. Peter’s School. Prior to joining the Army he was employed for four years at Messrs. Grandidge’s office, and was 18 months at Lloyd’s Bakery, Seacombe. Pte. Hooper’s officer in a letter of condolence to the bereaved parents writes:- “He was one of the most reliable of our men”.

The above newspaper article refers to Private Hooper as H. R. Hooper, when in fact his correct name is William Richard Hooper (W. R. Hooper) as confirmed by census and military records.
