Born Willaston, May 26, 1892. Son of Joseph and Eliza Massey of 68, Park Road, Willaston and husband of Kate Massey (nee Hammersley) of 119, Hospital Street, Nantwich. Educated at Willaston Council School. Served his apprenticeship in the Electrical Department, Crewe Works as an instrument maker and later worked at the Marconi Works at Chelmsford. Enlisted in the Royal Navy on July 22, 1913 and joined HMS Black Prince on April 21, 1914. During the Battle of Jutland the Black Prince of the 1st Cruiser Squadron, became somewhat isolated and was set upon by ships of the German High Seas Fleet. Standing little chance, it was hit by salvo after salvo until it blew up with all hands - 37 officers, 815 ratings and 5 civilians. He is commemorated as a Petty Officer on the Willaston War Memorial.
