Geoffrey's Story.
Born in 1922 son of Fred and Sarah Ellen Woodcock of, Sale Moor, Cheshire. He attended Burnage High School, when he left, he worked for Tootall, Broadhurst, Lee & Co. a spinning company in Manchester.
He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1941 and trained in Southern Rhodesia.
On completion he was posted to 7th Squadron, a path finder squadron based at RAF Oakington, at first the squadron flew Stirling MK I, however May 1943 Lancaster’s replaced the Stirlings. On Monday 27 September 1943 Geoffrey took off at 19.39 hrs from RAF Oakington in a Lancaster III, JA849, MG-F for a raid on Hanover. It was his 43rd operational flight. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed near to Quackenbruck. One crew member, rear gunner Flight Sergeant James Kanelakos, a Canadian survived and was taken prisoner.
