Born Crewe, enlisted Manchester. Formerly a blacksmith in Crewe Works, before being transferred to the sheds at Patricroft. Husband of Maria Francis of 34A, Peel Street, Crewe (later at 165, Richard Moon Street) and son of Thomas and Ellen Francis. Prominent footballer who won several medals for his workshop team in the Cottage Hospital Cup. Previously served in the Railway Volunteers and was with the 8th Railway Company, Royal Engineers, during the Boer War, where he saw action at Modder River and Belmont. Enlisted again on September 3, 1914. Went to the Front on September 26, 1914. Twice wounded (serious scalp wound and bullet wound to the head), and returned to his unit just 10 days before his death.
