Alexander was born Alexander Bentley Heath on 29 May 1917 in Northwich and he lived at 55 School Lane, Lostock Gralam, Northwich at the time of his death.  He was the adopted son of Mr and Mrs Richard Bettelley and he attended Danebridge School in Northwich.  He started work at ICI when he was 15 as a labourer and later moved across to Wallerscsote Works as a sheet metal worker.  He married Doris Cooke on 12 Feb 1944 at Lostock Gralam St John. 

966769 Gunner Bettelley served in the 90th Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery and died on 12 June 1944.  Alexander is buried at Ryes War Cemetery, Bazenville, Calvados, FRANCE.  His memorial has a cross and bears the inscription:-

Now the race of life is run
Father, grant Thy wearied one
Rest for evermore.
His loving wife.
