William's Story.
EARLY LIFE
William Pomfret was baptised at St Michael's Church on 31 October 1886, the son of Mary and John Pomfret, an overlooker of Station Street, Macclesfield.
In 1912, William married Bertha Holland at the Bourne Methodist Church, Byron Street, Sutton, Macclesfield. A son, Arthur, was born in 1914.
COMMEMORATION
Private William Pomfret is buried in Grave Ref. V. F. 10 at Hill 10 Cemetery in Turkey. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds casualty details for Private William Pomfret, and he is listed on the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War website.
In Macclesfield, Private William Pomfret is commemorated on the Park Green, Town Hall, St Michael's Church, St George's Church and Hurdsfield Holy Trinity Church war memorials.
The floral tributes laid when the Macclesfield Park Green War Memorial was unveiled on 21st September 1921 included one with the words “In loving memory of Private Wm. Pomfret.”
